Altering metadatas

Metadatas are data containing information about the property of another data or file.

In case of image files (jpg, png, raw), EXchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) is used.

Exif view

It is possible to view EXIF data in both Darktable and Gimp. Exif data contains information about characteristics of the camera and lens used to make the shots (such as maker, model, aperture, exposure, focal length, even the focus distance).

This information comes in handy when you want to sort your images according to their characteristics with help of Darktable collections.

Darktable: go to import on the lighttable view, in the left menu, click on image information
Gimp: open the image menu, then metadata and “view metadata”.

Exif edition

Part of EXIF information can be edited with Gimp and Darktable. This information relate to the image description:

  • Title

  • Creator / Author

  • Description

  • Tags / keywords

  • Copyright

Darktable: go to import on the lighttable view, in the left menu, click on metadata editor, tagging.
Gimp: open the image menu, then metadata and “edit metadata”.
