Darktable
Darktable is the open source software (developed by a community of volunteers). It is the standard for RAW, png or jpeg photo retouching, actively maintained by its developers, so all updates are free (unlike its paid alternatives).
It has advanced photo editing features to make colours more vibrant, put light back into dark areas (or vice versa), increase the amount of details and even alter lens distortions!
It also has advanced features to correct colors and skin imperfections.

Edit of a photo which was too dark and lacking highlights
This edit benefited from an adjusted contrast with rgb levels adjustement and shadows lighting adjustment.
Highlighting with vignetting and curves
Although the framing was highlighting the bike and centered around it, the original photo looked bland. I edited it using mainly levels, curves, colours adjustments and also a vignetting to accentuate the framing around the bicyle.
